INFORMATION SYSTEM

The RUSTIK Information System is an analytical interface providing access to meaningful data sets illuminating three key transitions in rural areas: socio-economic, environmental, and digital.

The System connects a central EU platform with regional systems at the Pilot Region level (the Living Labs interface). The Core RUSTIK European interface fosters comparability and transferability of data across regions and territories, while the Living Lab interface emphasizes locally curated datasets that answer to place-based challenges.

Rural areas overview

The concept of a rural area does not have a single, universally recognized definition. In general terms, a rural area is understood as a territory located outside major urban centers, characterized by low population density, a strong presence of natural or agricultural land, and a significant dependence on local resources such as agriculture, forestry, livestock farming, or rural tourism.

However, rurality cannot be described solely through quantitative or statistical criteria. It represents a complex and multidimensional territorial condition, encompassing demographic, economic, environmental, cultural, and social dimensions. Rural areas may include both remote and sparsely populated regions as well as peri-urban territories that maintain an agricultural or environmental vocation despite their proximity to urban centers.

Within the Living Lab Core of this viewer, the heterogeneity in the amount of data displayed for each Living Lab may depend on the heterogeneity of the types of data collected by each of them.

Within this project, both quantitative and qualitative data have been collected. Qualitative data are not represented through numerical indicators and therefore are not directly observable in the viewer. For this reason, users are strongly encouraged to consult the various project deliverables developed throughout the project for more detailed information on the experiments carried out within the RUSTIK Project and on the types of data collected and analyzed.
